Are you looking for a hip happy hour spot where you and your pals can see-and-be-seen without the scene? What would you say to organic / sustainable food and cocktails to go along with the casual vibe in Culver City’s upscale Restaurant Row?
Opened in 2008, Akasha Restaurant has one of the best (and still relatively undiscovered) happy hours in town. Monday – Friday from 2:30 – 7 pm, the bar in the main dining room offers 4 1/2 hours of “happy.” Who wouldn’t be joyful sipping beer, wine and cocktails at 50% off while nibbling on reasonably priced Merguez Sausage Pizza with Chevre and Manchego Cheese; Fish Tacos; or Fried Chicken Sliders, to name but a few?
The cocktail list employs some of our favorite organic and / or sustainable beverages such as the Red Velvet Margarita featuring 4 copas organic tequila, blood orange juice, lime and agave nectar; or the Free Radical made with Veev acai spirit and Sambazon acai juice, both products contribute money to support environmentally-friendly harvesting of acai berries in Brazil’s Rain Forest region.
The restaurant is named for its owner, celebrity chef Akasha Richmond, who began her career at Golden Temple, one of the first high-end vegetarian restaurants in Los Angeles. She has also worked as a private chef for A-list entertainer such as Michael Jackson, Barbara Streisand, Billy Bob Thornton, and Pierce Brosnan. Akasha’s 2002 cookbook, entitled Hollywood Dish, combines her own recipes with stories about Hollywood and it's love affair with healthy cuisine.
In October, the venue kicks off The Lounge at Akasha with happy hour from 6- 7 pm in its front room and will feature live music on Fridays. (Insider Tip: we hear that through the end of September, the Happy Hour prices are extended until 10 pm…)
For those looking for a full dining experience, why not sign up for the Tru Organic Spirits Dinner at AKASHA on September 24? Chef Akasha Richmond will present a farmers-market menu influenced by the flavors of India with cocktail pairings. At only $45 per person for sustainable food and drinks, you and your wallet can feel very good about the occasional indulgence.
