Death Proof & Alcohol: Drinking to A Tarantino movie

It’s obvious that drinking and driving can kill. But in Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse feature Death Proof, it’s not the drinking that kills. There’s more flowing liquor than rivulets of blood in this high-octane, high-proof party not-your-stereotypical-chick chick flick.

For those playing the home version of the Death Proof drinking game, here’s the line up:

Shanna: “So what’s the plan, man?”

Jungle Julia: “Margaritas and Mexican food at Guero’s…

House Margaritas on the rocks with salt

1 ½ oz. tequila

½ oz. triple sec

1 oz. lime juice

Shake ingredients with ice and serve. To get a salt rim, rub a lime wedge over the glass rim and rotate edge around a plate of big grainy rock salt.

Later, the girls are hanging out with their boys at the Texas Chili Parlor, owned by Warren, who’s played by director Quentin Tarantino. The table starts off with a bunch of local Shiner Bock beers. Then,

Warren: “Shots first, questions later. Here we go. Post time!”

They down shots of green liquid.

Warren: “Now is that a tasty beverage, or is that a tasty beverage?”

Butterfly: “What the *$%# is it?”

Warren: “Chartreuse. The only liquor so good they named a color after it.”

Next, the guys are buying so they can get invited to the “girls only” night at the cabin by the lake. Shanna orders “another big-ass Long Island Iced Tea” and Julia’s beau already knows what she’s having: “Bombay Sapphire and tonic, no ice,” a basic gin and tonic.

Long Island Iced Tea

½ oz. Triple Sec

½ oz. light rum

½ oz. gin

½ oz. vodka

½ oz. tequila

1 oz. sour mix

Pour all into a tall glass with ice, stir well and top with a splash of Coca-Cola.

Gin and Tonic

Fill a tall glass full of ice with gin, 1-2 ounces (to taste). Top with tonic water, garnish with a lime wedge.

At the bar, the guys are looking to “turn up the volume” by next ordering a round of Jäger shots, and then the girl’s favorite shooters: Buttery Nipple for Shanna, Key Lime Pie for Jungle Julia.

Buttery Nipple

Pour 1 oz. Butterscotch liqueur (or DeKuypers Buttershot) into a cold shot glass, then carefully layer ½ oz. of cold Irish Cream, like Bailey’s on top.

Key Lime Pie

1 oz. Licor 43

1 oz. Half-and-Half cream

½ oz. fresh lime juice

Shake with ice and strain into shot glass.

But for scary driver Stuntman Mike, “I’m a teetotaler. I’ve been drinking club soda and lime all night, and now I’m building up for my big drink…virgin piña colada.”

Virgin Piña Colada

7 oz. pineapple juice

2 oz. coconut cream

1 cup crushed ice

Put all in a blender on high for about a minute. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry on an umbrella toothpick.

Stuntman Mike’s rationale for his order: “Alcohol is just a lubricant for all the individual encounters that a bar offers.”

Suddenly, Jungle Julia yells: “Warren! Six shots of Wild Turkey!” The Real Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey gets some lovin’ money shots, and is probably a better choice than Jäger.

Pam, about to get a ride home with Stuntman Mike, orders a Cadillac Cabo Wabo Margarita. Made like a regular margarita with Cabo Wabo brand tequila , but with a half ounce of Grand Marnier floated on top or served on the side.

As payment for his lap dance, Stuntman Mike buys Julia and Butterfly a final round of Shiner Bocks, and recites a poem.

And then there’s the climax of part one, with the fast cars on a night-blackened country road.

Part two, in Tennessee, doesn’t have drinking, but Abby asks Kim to pick up “vodka and sugar-free Red Bull ” from the store. They don’t have any, so she gets G.O. juice instead.

That’s enough gas to get your pulse up for the climax of the movie. If there’s anything left in your tank, check out the second part of the Grindhouse double feature, Planet Terror.
