Have you ever opened your eyes on a Sunday morning dreaming of wrapping your lips around a succulent morsel of foie gras on a stick, wrapped in house-spun cotton candy? Maybe follow that up with Jamon Iberico on Catalan style toasted pan-con-tomate, and wash it all down with a flash-frozen “nitro” blood orange screwdriver, whipped up tableside by a molecular mixologist?
Wake up sunshine, this ain’t no sueno. The ever-popular Bazaar restaurant inside the SLS (See Life Sideways) hotel is now serving weekend brunch! Sure, those hotel guests are gonna get a tickle in the tastebuds but the real winners are the day-in and day-out residents of Los Angeles because we can roll in any weekend we like, and spoil ourselves with a Spanish-influenced extravaganza. Let’s raise a Bloody Mary topped with wasabi foam to that!
Celebrity Chef Jose Andres, the creative powerhouse behind a bi-coastal restaurant empire, maintains residence in Washington DC but leaves his West Coast baby in the able hands of his newly appointed Chef de Cuisine Joshua Whigham. Having worked alongside Andres at DC hotspots Café Atlantico and Zaytinya, Wingham was also part of the founding staff at Minibar, the molecular gastronomic marvel in our Nation’s Capital. There is also a new Executive Chef running all of the SLS kitchesn, Chef Jorge Chicas. And, the changing of the guard goes right to the top as The Bazaar’s new GM John Cunin brings his 35 years of experience at top tier eateries such as the Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley and most recently Alain Ducasse’s MIX in Las Vegas. The implementation of Chef Andres’ dream team translates to a midday meal to make you wish weekend brunch were available everyday.
Brunches looking for the traditional-with-a-twist swoon over the Bagel & Lox Cone stuffed with herbed cream cheese and salmon roe; and delight in the crispy “air bread” filled with smoked salmon and tzatziki yogurt. Spanish tapas of embutidos such as chorizo (spicy dry sausage), lomo (pork) and salchichon (small sausages) as well as varieties of ham quell the yen for Espana on La Cienega.
Watermelon and Tomato Skewers doused with a Pedro Ximenez sherry reduction is a refreshing bite between decadent courses. Olive Oil Pancakes is the Mediterranean counterpart to heart-clogging butter and goopey sweet syrup for diners whose palate has evolved beyond the neighborhood IHOP. And, don’t forget to ask for Jose’s gin-and-tonic for the perfect Sunday morning ‘hair of the dog.’
Egg lovers will delight in Huevos “Andy Garcia,” which features a dozen tiny quail eggs over a potato pancake. And Pisto – a vegetable stew popular in Northern Spain and Southern France – warms the belly on a chilly morning. (What? 65 degrees is chilly in LA.) Having a hard time making a choice? Indulge in the brunch inspired tasting menu for only $40 per person and have a sampling of several delicacies. Even after the wildest weekend party night has left you feeling sideways, the stylish Bazaar brunch at SLS will set you straight again in no time.
