Everybody loves a little something sweet now and then. Autumn always feels like the beginning of "indulgence season," in other words, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years --- sweets, treats, family gatherings and lots of food and drink! Here are a few to please a variety of tastebuds from the eco-friendly to the chocoholic to the party people. Koval Organic Floral Liqueurs are right up my alley. From launching The Liquid Muse Sustainable Sips® class in 2007 to the release of my certified organic OM Cocktails in 2012, I’m a longtime cheerleader for eco-friendly, healthier libations. I love making homemade syrups infusing lavender, hibiscus and jasmine in my books and the brands I manage, G’Vine gin and June liqueur, are both macerated with French grapevine flowers. Given all of that, you can imagine how eager I was to try these organic, floral liqueurs!Koval Liqueurs are darn near perfect. The notes are subtle enough not to overpower a base spirit when mixed in a cocktail, and authentic enough to enjoy alone with no lingering artificial aftertaste. Rose Hip tastes a bit like a tart strawberry with the brightness of a dry Provencal rosé wine and has pine-like earthiness. Chrysanthemum & Honey’s sun-kissed sweetness has a lovely softness. If wheat were a flower, it would taste like this. The Ginger has a slight ginger spicy kick but my only critique is that it falls a little flat at the end. I’d like more spice. Take time to smell (taste) the flowers and try all three for yourself. Drambuie 15 Scotch Liqueur is a joyride of exotic spice, wild roots, Christmas cookies baking in the oven, a base of fine malted barley booze, without a moment of cloying pandering to the masses. At 86 proof (versus the standard 40 proof) this is not a sissy liqueur but rather a lightly sweetened spirit. Despite my love of summer, Drambuie 15 makes me yearn for a roaring fire if only to cozy up beside it with a snifter of Scotchy delight. Simply put: I love it. Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream is, as the name implies, a cream liqueur made with Tennessee whiskey. The bottle boasts “natural flavors” which pretty much tells me that there is probably nothing truly natural about this product. That does not, however, change the fact that it is creamy and luscious, and ideal for holiday indulgence. I have enjoyed it over a couple of ice cubes, and embrace it as my latest guilty pleasure. Crave (DeKuyper) Chocolate Truffle Liqueur is great for the holidays. Whether at home or a pubic house of booze, someone is going to want a “chocolate marteeeeni!” Its my duty to give friends the best thing available to suit their tastes. I expected to turn up my nose when I first sipped this liqueur, and that was not the case at all. It is very rich… just as a chocolate truffle is. I am one of those oddballs who doesn’t go ga-ga for chocolate but I would venture to say that for someone who does love dark, rich, creamy chocolate in a glass… this would be for you. Jagermeister Spice goes to prove that no matter how big and successful a brand already is, innovation is always important. This product builds upon the spicy kick of the original recipe but amps it up to steroid levels. And, lets face it, everyone takes off their “mixology hat” once in a while, and Jager is your loyal companion when you’re ready to throw back to your roots of dancing on the bar. Jager Spice has the herbal zing to be touted as the more sophisticated version of the frat boy original. Ask for it.
