Casa Bacardi – Sitges, Spain

When you think of rum, places like Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean probably spring to mind.  However, did you know that Spain has a significant role in modern “rumology?”  If you’ve ever heard of a lil’ ol brand called Bacardi, its about time you took note.Don Facundo Bacardi was born in Sitges, Spain (just outside Barcelona) in 1814.  However, he later set off to the exotic isles of Cuba and Puerto Rico, and in 1862 he set up his first distillery.  From there, the continuously family-owned business gained significant success and is now one of the biggest brands in the world, with distilleries in several countries.  I recently visited the Casa Bacardi situated in the charming little seaside resort town of Sitges to learn more about the history and intrigue behind the spirit capturing the imagination of today’s mixologists and consumers, alike. This video, featuring Juan Bergaz (6th generation Bacardi family member), highlights some of the main factors in the company’s success and gives a little insight into both the history of Bacardi and rum,  Whether mixing a classic mojito or getting creative with new twists on rum-based cocktails, this is a spirit worth exploring.  Cheers!
